West Side Access
West Side Access is a public works project proposed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City. The goal of the project is to allow Metro-North Railroad commuter trains to access Penn Station on Manhattan's West Side. Metro North trains currently terminate exclusively at Grand Central on Manhattan's East Side. The project would complement the ongoing East Side Access project.
First proposed as early as 1999 by the FTA and Metro North Railroad,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Penn Station Access Study )〕 the project would bring Metro North trains into Penn Station. Additionally, the project would add at least six new stations in the Bronx and Manhattan, and allow Metro North riders to arrive at either Penn Station or Grand Central.
== Overview ==
Officially, the project is known by the MTA as the Penn Station Access Study.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Penn Station Access Study )〕 The overall goal of the West Side Access project is to enhance and expand the transit options of Metro North East of Hudson riders which include residents of the Bronx, Westchester, Dutchess, and Putnam counties, as well as Manhattan riders.〔 〕
The project would commence in two separate phases. Phase One involves the construction of four new stations while Phase Two would involve upgrading the West Side Rail Line and adding two more stations on the far Upper West Side, utilizing Amtrak's Empire Connection.
